Homework
The Homework Journal is sent home on Mondays. All work should be completed and returned by Friday.
((The homework activities provided are meant to be practice for skills/concepts already practiced and learned in class. They are also meant to be completed over the course of Monday through Thursday. I do not expect students to complete the work all in one day. Each activity from Word Work, Fluency, Reading Comprehension, and Math should only take about 5 minutes each, and only one activity from each is expected to be done each day. No more than 15-20 minutes should be spent on paper-and-pencil work nightly. However, this IS in addition to the required 20 minutes of reading a night. It is suggested to do the homework directly after school, and reading at night before bed.))

Breakdown
Word Work:
The first page in the homework journal will be the word work. There is a list of words that follow a word pattern for students to use in their daily activities. From the choice board, students should choose three activities to create a "tic-tac-toe". I prefer that students do not choose the same three each time, but try all of them at least once. Only one activity needs to be completed daily. I do NOT expect students to sit and do it all in a day. We have recently completed the RRISD 1st Grade High Frequency Word list. Students should be familiar with these in both reading and writing. You can find the list here, if you would like to continue to work on it with your student. Reading Comprehension: Included in the homework this time will be some reading comprehension activities. Each day, students should start by reading the short story. Then, they should complete the quick activity for the day. These stories will increase in difficulty as we go, making our way up to more difficult grade-level text. The will be appropriate to the students' reading levels as well. |
Fluency:
At the bottom of the Word Work page, you will notice a fluency review. We are working right now on trying to make our reading smooth, like when we speak, and not robotic. This part will consist of six short sentences that contain sight words as well as words following familiar patterns. There is a daily review for Monday through Thursday to help students read more fluidly. Fluency is NOT about speed (except on Thursday) but about how smooth the reading is. Repeated reading is a great way to have students practice automatic recognition of words AS WELL AS read more like they are speaking and less choppy. Please check a box each day once your child has completed the fluency activity for that day. Math: Each week, a math page will be included in the journal. There will be an activity to complete each day. Students are not expected to complete more than one activity a day. |
